Essentials

Boots:Good ankle support.....Good
treads.......check for 'wear

Waterproofs:Jacket and trousers..........only waterproof if seams are sealed..........showerproof not adequate

Trousers: NOT denim or thick cord - get wet/stay wet!

Tops:Several thin layers keep you warmer than one thick layer

Hat and Gloves:Thermal or woolly...............most body heat is lost through the head

Socks:Always wear at least two pairs...............helps prevent blisters!

Rucksacks:Big enough to carrry all your kit!!!!..........NO rucksack is waterproof..........ALWAYS line your sack with a plastic liner

Trowel:Don't add to the human pollution already littering the countryside

First Aid Kit:Plasters, ankle bandage (crepe/conforming), antiseptic wipes, triangular bandage, gauze swabs, midge repellent, small scissors

Food:Adequate food and drink for the length of time away from home

Emergency Rations:
Always carry 'something extra' to eat in case of delays...best to take something you do not particularly like - then you won't be tempted to eat it unless there is an emergency!

Optional Extras:Gaiters, walking poles, map and compass (leaders MUST have these), thermal pad to sit on, mobile telephone (may not receive signal!!)
